Welcome Liann

Our New Patient

Co-ordinator

As the Patient Co-ordinator, I am here to guide our new patients through the initial stages of braces. I am here to answer any questions patients have about the braces, length of treatment, payment plans, or more!

I am so excited to join the Newpark Clinic team! I absolutely love the office and the Blackrock area and I find everyone is just so friendly. My role as the Patient Co-ordinator is so important to new patients visiting our clinic.

I am here to guide our new patients through the initial stages of braces. Whether they have questions about which brace to choose, how to clean the braces, how to make payments or about our monthly payment plans – I am here for them.

At a consultation, I welcome new patients to the clinic and walk them through their appointment with our Orthodontist, Dr O’Donnell. I also give detailed information on each brace and our payment plans. After the consultation, I am available for any questions or concerns our new patients may have.

My favourite part of my day is meeting new people. Once I bring patients into our relaxed environment, everyone is instantly put at ease and I even have a laugh with the kids. I also enjoy helping patients select which brace option is best for them. Every patient’s teeth and life are so different, so it’s important for me to help them choose which option suits best. At the end of the day, I care for our patients how I would like my own family to be treated, with understanding and exceptional service.

I see new patients for consultations on Monday – Thursday on mornings, afternoons and evenings. If you would like to reserve a consultation you can contact reception at (01) 210 4588 or info@newparkclinic.com

Bray – The Family’s

Weekend Treasure

Just 35 minutes from Blackrock, Bray is the perfect place for a day trip - Foodies and nature lover galore!

As Dorothy once said, “there’s no place like….Bray!” Born and bred in Bray, I recognise all its subtle beauty and relaxing lifestyle. From quirky and fun restaurants, to the big summer carnival, it’s walks and nature spots, there’s a lot to love about this little community. It’s 10 minutes to the beach and 10 minutes to the mountains – the best of both worlds! Here are some of my favourite places for family fun and outings:

Bray Beach

It’s hard to not mention Bray’s beach as it’s my all-time favourite place. The crashing waves and salty air is a perfect moment of calm from the bustling Dublin city. There’s also a lovely grass promenade above the beach, which is perfect for a walk – I bring the family dog here at least 2 times a week. In the summer, there’s no other place like it!

Platform Pizza

The rustic interior, plush leather seats, stone walls and even a car on the roof; Platform Pizza is the perfect Saturday lunch and dinner spot for the entire family. But the real hero here is the food – mouth-watering, pizzas, savoury sandwiches, burgers and fresh salads are simply divine. It’s great family fun and comes at good value. Just have a look at their Instagram to see the masterpieces they can cook up!

Harbour Bar

A great spot for a night out and live music, the Harbour Bar is also the home of the famous Toastie Festival. With live music nearly every night and open mic on Wednesday, this is a lively place to be. The Toastie Festival is one you really have to sink your teeth into! About a 2 minute walk the from the Dart station, on the Strand road, the Harbour Bar is the perfect family friendly (and pet friendly) bar.

Bray Wanderers

If fresh air and a bit of football is your weekend getaway, go on over to the Bray Wanderers Club for a match. Offering senior, U19, U17 and U15 divisions, it’s the perfect fit for teens and adults looking for some fun or just to watch. Their club is located at Carlisle Grounds on Quinsborough Road, just opposite the Dart station.

Bray Head

When walking along the beach, it’s hard not to notice the Bray Head peaking out in the distance. About 40 minute walk to the top, it has spectacular views of the seafront and Bray. The climb is not difficult overall, but there are some challenging parts to it. To get to the mountain, follow the promenade up the hill and you will see some steps and then a path leading all the way up to the cross on the top!

We are really lucky in Bray that it’s so easily accessible. Either by car (from the N11) or from public transport (Dart, Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann and the Glendalough bus), Bray is just a short trip away from Dublin with a fun day packed with all the best hidden gems.

Top Product’s For Your Skin

This Winter

This time of the year, skin care is very important. As temperatures drop and the heat turns on, moisture is drawn out of the skin causing dryness.

Recently, I am seeing a lot of my clients suffering from flaky, dry and dehydrated skin. You must take extra care to protect your skin and prevent any further damage by using the proper products. My recommended products and treatments are meant to be added in addition to your normal skin care routine (and not used replacements or one-for-all cures).

Vitamin A Retinol

I recommend using Vitamin A Retinol at night-time. Retinol works on a deep cellular level to help your skin heal from the inside out. This powerful product promotes healthy skin cell turnover, decreases collagen breakdown therefore thickening the skin and improving hydration. It also delivers nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells by regulating blood flow.

Barrier Creams

During the day, it is crucial to protect skin from cold temperatures and harsh winds.

Epionce’s Medical Barrier Cream soothes and rebuilds skin by using active ingredients. I personally use this product every day and find it extremely handy when the winter months come around. This cream contains essential fatty acids that are vital for building strong and healthy skin. The EpiB complex contains avocado, rose hip and safflower extracts to hydrate skin to create a soft and smooth texture. This is a great cream for sensitive skin because it is fragrance and paraben free.

Epionce products are available for purchase at our clinic.

Serums

The biggest difference between a serum and a cream/lotion is the formulation. Serums leave out airtight, moisturising ingredients (such as petrolatum or mineral oils) that keeps water from evaporating. They also contain fewer lubricating and thickening agents, like nut or seed oils. So, it is a very thin product that absorbs easily into the skin to provide hydrating and renewing effects.

I recommend Epionce’s Intense Defense Serum as a great night-time serum. This is a highly advanced anti-aging serum using botanical sources of Vitamins A, B, C, D and E for healthier-looking skin.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion treatments leave the face smooth and refreshed, alleviating any dry/flaky skin.

Our medical grade microdermabrasion treatments go above and beyond a regular facial. It uses medical crystals to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of skin. It is suitable for all skin types and all ages. I carry out all the aesthetic treatments at Newpark Clinic. A microdermabrasion treatment takes about 45 minutes and I recommend getting one done every 6-8 weeks. I also include a mask after the exfoliation for extra hydration.

To reserve a free consultation to see what I would recommend for your particular skin, you can message or call the clinic.

Halloween Sweets & Teeth

By | Blog

A Sticky Situation This Halloween?

There’s nothing like the childhood joy of dumping a night’s worth of Halloween sweets on the carpet to see all your takings! Immediately popping your favourite chocolate bar into your mouth while pawing through the rest and trading the worst with your friends. It’s an exciting time for children, but as adults we need to consider the impact of this excess amount of sweets.

Sugar and Health

Sugar is damaging to our health overall. More specifically, it can lead to weight gain, heart disease a decrease in immune system, loss of nutrients, poor digestion and tooth decay. While all these health issues are important, we would like to highlight the specific risk sugar has on teeth.

Tooth Decay

Normally, there is natural bacteria that lives in the mouth which creates acid. This bacteria also thrives off sugar! When consuming sugary foods and drinks, this bacteria can multiply and can become even more acidic than usual. This can dissolve teeth, creating holes aka “dental caries”. To help prevent this, we recommend to brush 3 times daily, floss regularly and to have a well balanced diet. Also visiting a dental hygienist twice a year for a deep clean will help remove plaque and tartar build-up. Worst case scenario, a dentist can treat tooth decay with fillings, crowns or root canals.

Halloween Sweets

When left to binge eat sugary treats, children are more at risk for tooth decay and plaque. See our diagram below with the most popular Halloween sweets and their sugar content!

Health care agencies recommend that children consume no more than 7 teaspoons of sugar daily. This is difficult to control at Halloween when one mini-size Skittles has approximately 3 teaspoons of sugar, a mini Twix has 3 teaspoons and a mini Crunchie has 3 teaspoons. So, two small sweets and that’s the limit for the entire day (not including the other sugars within regular meals).

What To Do?

  • Replace sweets with some healthy alternatives (check out these fun recipes)
  • Brush immediately after meals and floss regularly (try using a soft brush on the gums as well)
  • Use a fluoride mouth wash regularly
  • Visit a dental Hygienist
  • Reduce snacking
  • Set limits or specific times for sweets (after dinner only or as a reward for daily chores)
  • Try the “Switch Witch”

Why It’s The Right Time To Get Braces

Why It’s The Right Time To Get Braces

It seems that just about everyone today wears braces for teeth straightening. From Instagram bloggers, to your co-workers, Katie Holmes on her Ray Donovan show, even your neighbour’s granny probably is looking into braces now! At our orthodontic clinic in Dublin, we are getting more enquiries than ever from people who are now deciding to straighten their teeth.

Over the last 10 years, Google searches for braces in Ireland increased over 300% in popularity (source: Google Trends). And to be honest, there is no time like the present to begin a journey towards a new smile. As technology advances across the globe, so has the technology and science behind dental braces:

Invisalign Clear Braces

The days of limited orthodontic options (head gear or train tracks only) are now behind us. Now, Invisalign clear braces are taking the world by storm with over 5 million cases across the globe. While these Invisalign is popular for its virtually invisible appearance, it also packs a powerful punch. Now it can treat mild, moderate and severe cases.

Invisalign (one of the most popular clear brace providers in the US & Ireland) started in 1997 and they “..are the most advanced clear aligner system in the world, constantly imagining and developing new technologies to help people move forward with their lives” (Invisalign.ie).

They even have the world’s largest 3D printing technology (as all their aligners are 3D printed). Plus, Invisalign providers now use a 3D scanner to start every patient’s treatment and to show their expected finish smile.

See more about Invisalign’s technologies:

Braces For All Ages

People always ask us: “is my child too young for a braces?” and “am I too old to have my teeth straightened?” Nearly every time, the answer to both is no! As more research and more advanced braces are available on the market, the larger age range for orthodontic treatment.

The Orthodontic Association of Ireland recommends parents bring their child to their first orthodontic assessment at age 7 (orthodontics.ie). There are certain types of bite issues that can only be addressed as children (before or during their growth-spurt and while the jaw/bones are still growing). We even have children as young as 8 in treatment at our clinic. Older children and teens are also treatable, as these are the most common age-groups to have braces.

Adults can be seen at any age; whether it’s for the first time, or if they had braces previously and their teeth have now started to move. About 50% of our patients are adults and we commonly treat patients in their 60’s as well. No matter what age, we recommend to visit an Orthodontist for a quick consultation to receive their expert opinion.

Orthodontists’ Expertise

With all the providers of dental braces available today, it’s now easier than ever to select a brace specialist, aka an Orthodontist. Orthodontists first obtain a 5 year degree in Dentistry and then achieve a speciality in Orthodontics after another 3 year course. With their previous education, training and engagement with the growing technologies behind straightening teeth, Orthodontists are now capable of delivering the most effective and smoothest treatments possible.

Our Orthodontist, Dr. Máirlín O’Donnell has over 20 years of experience and specialises in the Invisalign. She attends conferences and lectures worldwide to expand her skills and had her cases highlighted at these events.

It’s always a good time to start your braces journey, but now, the technology behind orthodontics is flourishing. Seize this moment in time and join us for a complimentary consultation today!

5 Ways To Whiten Teeth At Home

By | Blog

Why is Teeth Whitening Needed?

Have you ever caught your smile in a mirror and thought, “oh, my teeth are a bit yellow!”

Teeth discolouration occurs for many reasons overtime. Staining can form from coloured foods and drinks (like tea, coffee and wine) and smoking. Tartar and plaque can build up if oral hygiene is poor, which can discoloured teeth. Also, your enamel (the outermost layer of a tooth) can wear down over time, revealing the dentin (a yellow tissue) below.

Thankfully, most discolourations can be remedied with our at-home whitening methods:

  1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a common ingredient in most toothpastes and has natural whitening properties. Brushing your teeth with baking soda and water works a mild abrasive that gently scrubs the surface of teeth over time. Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water, brush 1-2 times per week. However, if done too frequently or for a long time, this can be too abrasive to teeth.

  1. At Home Teeth Whitening Kits From a Qualified Professional

At home teeth whitening kits consists of a tray that is shaped to your specific teeth and tubes of whitening solution. The whitening process lasts from 1-3 weeks depending on the shade of the teeth. Unlike some whitening treatments that use a bright light or laser directly to the teeth, the at home kit allows people to feel in control of the treatment. Patients have the ability to stop whitening when they are happy with the shade or if they feel any sensitivity. There is also the option to top up later on in the year.

Always visit a qualified dental professional to whiten your teeth as they have the proper training to recognise any complications with your teeth. Our advanced at home teeth whitening kits are available at our clinic to individuals aged 18+.

  1. Coconut Oil Pulling

While coconut oil pulling or other forms of oil pulling have not been scientifically proven to whiten teeth, it does seem to have positive effects on oral hygiene. Oil pulling is the process of taking a small amount of oil and swishing it around in the mouth for 10 minutes or so. This is not to be used as a replacement for brushing or flossing, but it can be used in addition. Taking a teaspoon full of coconut oil and swish it around your mouth as you would with mouthwash (start with just a few minutes and work your way up to 10).

  1. Brushing After Meals & Attending Regular Hygiene Cleanings

Daily oral hygiene upkeep is critical to keeping plaque and tartar at a minimum. Brushing your teeth promptly after each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for 2 minutes and flossing every day is ideal. Everyone should visit a dental hygienist for a cleaning twice a year. These visits are known as a “scale and polish” where the hygienist scales away plaque and tartar (from the teeth and the under the gum line) and polishes the teeth to take away any superficial staining. Some individuals may notice their teeth are a shade whiter leaving the hygienist!

Our hygienist, Kieva, is available for cleanings at our clinic for just €60!

  1. A Good Diet With Fruits & Vegetables

A good diet is beneficial to your entire body, including your teeth. Various, rough fruits and vegetables can also aid in scrubbing away plaque as you eat them. Some examples of good foods for your teeth are: strawberries, apples and celery.

Braces or Invisalign: Which is More Comfortable?

By | Blog

One of the main reasons why many adults and teenagers choose Invisalign braces is the perception that metal braces are painful. But is that true? Does Invisalign really hurt less than traditional metal braces?

What to expect?

There are a couple of studies looking into comfort of braces. In the first study, Orthodontists asked 145 patients to grade their comfort on a day-to-day basis using a scale.

Half the patients were being treated with Invisalign, half with traditional braces. The study showed that patients- with Invisalign reported more comfort and less pain than the patients being treated with traditional braces.

Quality of life

A second study asked 60 patients to grade pain and the impact treatment had on their ‘quality of life’. Again, half the patient were treated with Invisalign, half with traditional braces. The study found that the Invisalign patients experienced more comfort and treatment had little or no effect on the quality of their lives.

Right choice

If you have concerns about braces pain, then Invisalign could be the right choice for you. The majority of patients find them comfortable to wear and report little or no impact on their day to day lives.
